An Indian might have wanted her for a squaw. Somehow, years later, she escapes or is let go or someone finds her. She toughens up, learns the language, and basically forgets the 'white' way of life. Perhaps she picked ears from the stalks? I remember a doll too, made of rags/corn/something. I think she begs someone to let her go, but no one helps her. I believe she has her own teepee maybe something of a prison.

The Indians give her a name that has something to do with her hair/color of her hair. She, of course, doesn't speak their tongue and few, if any, of the Indians speak English (I think one lady does), so they don't understand each other much. If it's a white man, he sells her to a tribe. An Indian or white man (and some friends?) grabs her by the hair and makes off with her.

While still in town, the girl goes off somewhere by herself, since she's mad at her parents for taking the side of her sibling(s). Her brother/ sister was annoying her, and she might have hit him/her. Along the way west, the family stops at a store and the girl buys ribbons for her hair, I think. I'm left with the impression that her hair was really important to the story. She has long hair that she always keeps braided and, I believe, in two buns on the sides of her head it's her pride and joy. The main character is a blonde girl who is traveling west with her family in a wagon. The book is set during the Pioneer Days of America, I believe, or at least before the Civil War. How could she leave them? But she had also become a sister to the Indians. Then Mary was finally given the chance to return to the world of white men. She became a sister to animals and to all growing things. But the Indians were kind to her and taught her many things about the earth, its plants, and its creatures. Several times she even tried to run away. She missed her family terribly, and she was unaccustomed to Seneca ways. She traveled with the Indians to southern Ohio and later to a Seneca village on the Genesee River in what is now western New York. Mary was separated from her parents and brothers and sister.
